PN Paklenica

Astonishing beauty of the mythical Croatian Mt. Velebit reached its peak in Paklenica National Park. Passing through an area of barely 95 km2, you encounter extremely rich geomorphologic phenomena, animal and plant diversity, appealing scenery and unspoilt nature. Since it was created out of limestone and dolomite, Paklenica is characterised by a variety of karst phenomena such as cracks, groves, rocky areas, pits, faults and caves. Among the greatest and most abundantly adorned are the cave Manita Peć, prepared for tourist visits, and the Vodarica Pit.

Forests cover two thirds of the park area and are characterised by wide range of plants – from beech forests woods to indigenous black pine forests.

The name of Paklenica originates from the name of paklina – a black pine resin which was used to glaze boats, and often as a folk remedy.

Concerning the flora, the most notable is rock vegetation, especially various kinds of bell flowers, while sage and heather prevail on rocky soil. Furthermore, numerous sorts of orchids and lilies grow in the meadows of Paklenica.

The diverse habitats of Paklenica, well preserved eco-system and vertical stratification provide a home for diverse fauna, approximately more than 4000 different species. It is not rare to meet some of the species that have been extinct in many European regions. This is especially true of specific species of butterflies, i.e. southern festoon, scarce swallowtail or Papillion machaon.

Hiking is the only way to really get to know Paklenica. The Park area consists of 150-200 km of trails and paths, including those built for tourists. They go from the canyon Velika Paklenica to cave Manita Peć and forest cottage Lugarnica. The trails intended for mountaineers lead to the highest peaks of Velebit, Vaganski Vrh (1758 m) and Sveto Brdo (1753m). When passing along trails, we recommend that you use specialised mountaineering maps available either at the front reception desk of the main entrance, the park management office or the souvenir shop of the Paklenica Canyon.

More than half a century of mountaineering and sports-climbing has positioned Paklenica at equal foot with the best-known climbing centres. Climbing trails go into almost 400 directions of a varied difficulty and length, and the climbing season lasts from early spring to late autumn. However, the biggest number of climbers gathers on 1st of May when the Park hosts a traditional International Climbers' Meeting and Big Wall Speed Climbing Competition.
